Neurofeedback wearable bands for emotional control

A production wearable that turns raw brain and body signals into a calm, actionable sense of your own emotional state — built end to end, from electrodes to on-device models.

Emotional regulation is one of the most universal human challenges, and one of the hardest to support with technology. The signals are noisy, deeply personal, and have to be processed in real time on a device small enough to wear all day. This case brings together everything we believe: a product-first goal, serious R&D, and AI taken all the way into physical hardware.

The challenge

Our partner wanted a consumer wearable — a comfortable band — that could sense a wearer's emotional and stress state and gently guide them back toward calm through neurofeedback. The constraints were unforgiving:

  • Read clean physiological signal (EEG and heart-rate variability) from a low-cost, dry-electrode band
  • Infer emotional / arousal state continuously, on-device, with battery life measured in days
  • Close the loop with real-time neurofeedback — haptics and audio — without cloud round-trips
  • Stay private by design: raw neural data never has to leave the device

What we built

Signal pipeline

We built a robust on-device pipeline that cleans motion and muscle artifacts from dry-electrode EEG and fuses it with HRV. Getting usable signal from a comfortable, affordable band — rather than a lab cap — was the core research problem, and where most of the early effort went.

On-device emotion model

A compact, quantized model maps the fused signal to a continuous emotional-arousal estimate, personalised to each wearer through a short calibration. It runs entirely on the band's microcontroller, so feedback is instant and private.

The neurofeedback loop

When arousal climbs, the band responds in real time with subtle haptic and audio cues that guide breathing and attention — a closed feedback loop that teaches self-regulation over time rather than just reporting a number.

The goal was never to show someone a stress score. It was to help them change it — in the moment, on their own wrist.

Results

  • Production-grade band with multi-day battery life and fully on-device inference
  • Real-time neurofeedback latency low enough to feel immediately responsive
  • Privacy-preserving architecture — raw neural signal stays on the device
  • A calibration flow that adapts the model to each individual wearer
